Dear members, workers, Happy International Workers’ Day !

Today we pay tribute to the first labor fighters and the sacrifice they made to win the right to 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours for culture and education at a time when both adults and children worked 12 to 16 hours a day for miserable wages.

To date, we have made progress on the issue of workers’ rights, but when we look at the tendencies in certain American states regarding child labor, the attempts of billionaires to prevent unionization and the fact that perhaps each of us is wearing a piece of clothing that was sewn by a child in Asia, one wonders how much we have truly progressed.

When it comes to Croatia and journalism, the situation is not easy. Precarious work, unsafe forms of work, especially among freelancers, are problems we fight against every day. We use this opportunity to thank all of you who have actively joined the union and who persevere in the fight for better labor rights.

We continue this struggle, especially through pressure on employers to respect their workers. Our common goals are the fight for the house and branch collective agreement, the creation of the largest possible base of media workers who are ready for the trade union struggle, and the opening of opportunities for our membership for education and training in the matter of trade union activity.

We wish you to rest today, not to think about work and busy times. And from tomorrow, the fight continues! Happy International Workers’ Day!

Your Union of Croatian Journalists.
