Novi Sad: Hunger Strike for Free Public Media Services

The Chief Commissioner of the Independence Trade Union of JMU RTV, Darko Šper, began a hunger strike this morning at 9 AM in the building of Radio Television of Vojvodina due to the unfulfilled demands of employees, the trade union announced. Šper’s radical move surprised all employees, including members of the union he leads, as he had not previously announced his hunger strike. He will remain in the RTV building indefinitely and will not consume food during this period. Every day at noon, he will address journalists and provide updates on the fulfilment of the demands. In its statement, the trade union emphasized that General Director Goran Karadžić has repeatedly deceived trade union representatives by failing to meet their demands. For this reason, Šper has decided to draw attention to the issue through a hunger strike and demands the following:

  1. Director Karadžić must submit a request to the Management Board by March 19 for the dismissal of the Acting Editor-in-Chief of the First Television Program, Nenad Ćaćić.
  2. He is also required to announce an open tender to select all seven editors-in-chief and program directors of JMU RTV, who have been in acting positions for years.
  3. The director must present to the Management Board a proposal for a new job classification system, which was agreed upon with representative trade unions last year. The Management Board meeting where these issues will be discussed must be held no later than March 21.
  4. Negotiations on the new Collective Agreement of JMU RTV must be concluded by the end of March, and a one-time financial assistance payment of 15,000 dinars must be made to all employees and engaged personnel at JMU RTV.
  5. The director is required to meet with the delegation of students currently blocking the institution with the mediation of the Trade Union.
  6. Police officers who have been staying in the JMU RTV building for more than a month must leave the premises.
  7. A report on the hunger strike must be broadcast on March 18 in the 5 PM news bulletin.
  8. The mediators in the negotiations regarding the aforementioned demands will be Deputy General Director Sanja Kužić Jašarević and Management Board member Jožef Klem.
