As the year ends, we proudly reflect on all we have achieved together. This year has been challenging, but it has once again reminded us how important it is to unite, leverage the legal opportunities for collective action, and persist in fighting for the rights of all of us working in the media.
We have established two new branches of the Croatian Journalists’ Union (SNH), further expanding our network. We’ve also included freelancers and young professionals in the union’s work, ensuring they know our doors are open to everyone seeking their rights in this tough and often unpredictable environment. We are proud of the strides we’ve made in union organizing, particularly in private media, where we continue to face employer resistance. This was the year we proved that we can—and must—stand together in solidarity and speak out loudly.
The fight for workers’ rights in the media has never been more critical. We are witnessing serious threats to press freedom, pressures on journalists, and a worsening of their working conditions, but we have not backed down. The European Media Freedom Act has been one of the key issues we have worked on this year and will continue to address in 2025. Alongside our colleagues from the Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND), we have been actively working on implementing the Anti-SLAPP Directive, recommendations for the protection of journalists’ safety, and ensuring transparent media funding, especially at the local level. A free and responsible media sector is the foundation of any democratic society, which is why we will continue to seek mechanisms to protect not only journalists but also the integrity of media as a public good. For this reason, we will persist in advocating for changes to media legislation in Croatia.
In addition to fighting against SLAPP lawsuits and for better legal protections, we have focused on negotiating the basic rights of workers, collective bargaining at the level of media companies, and preparations for national-level negotiations. We know that union organizing and the fight for dignified working conditions are not luxuries but fundamental human rights.
We are also strengthening the union’s work through projects. We are part of several international projects and a partner in the major CERV initiative “Women in Media.” Through this project, we will work on empowering women in journalism and increasing their visibility. This is a step toward a fairer and more equitable media space, where everyone has the opportunity to be represented and protected.
The past year has demonstrated the power of solidarity and the importance of unity. We will not grow weary—we will continue the fight for better working conditions, media freedom, and the well-being of all union members and colleagues who work every day in service of the truth.
Thank you for being part of this journey. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a successful New Year 2025—may it be filled with health, strength, and courage to continue building a better tomorrow together.
In solidarity,
Maja Sever
